Captains Comment
I'm fond of Muswell Hill chess club. They are a community club and there is always plenty of activity on their Thursday club night. If you take the word of Wikepedia, an entertaining but not always reliable source of information, the name derives from a Mossy Well, a natural spring or well and pilgrims came for its miraculous cures in medieval times.
Certainly their improvement from the side that lost 7-1 at the Harvester back in December 09 is a miracle and if Muswell Hill can maintain the squad of players that faced us on 11th March they will no longer be a yo-yo club as Ealing were some years back, alternating between being relegated from the first division and being promoted to the first division.
The Opening: I was well beaten on board five and a faulty knight retreat on board two left us two-nil down.
The Middlegame: A splendid period for Ealing as Adrian Ociepka won with a king's side attack, Alan Perkins maintained his terrific record against Muswell Hill with another tremendous victory and Martin Smith and Sainbayer Tserendorj looked a different class from their opponents on boards seven and eight. Four-two Ealing and a guaranteed drawn match.
Endgame: Our board four had the advantage of the exchange but his foe's two bishops were very active so no luck here. Meanwhile a quite incredible contest was taking place on board six and despite heroic resistance by Tony Wells, he lost and the match score was levelled.
