Captains Comment

Mistakenly I relied upon on the Middlesex County Chess website for the current address of Hackney chess club but a rescue mission from the home club and the brainier members of my team delivered all of us to the right place. An unfortunate oversight by my opponent provided us with an early lead and Alan Perkins gave an excellent demonstration of how control of the queenside files in a closed position is decisive when Black has no compensating kingside attack. Although Ealing were two-nil up, it was a long time before the remaining encounters were decided as Hackney competed resolutely. Tony Wells produced a very nice combination to win an errant knight on a5 and sure-footedly brought home the full point. On board one John Quinn was on the defensive with the Black pieces but bravely, he opted for the counterattack rather than passivity and he was rewarded when under no time pressure, the Hackney number one blundered. Adrian Ociepka is a brilliant tactician and although his early pawn onslaught led to nothing, he re-adjusted to create winning chances in the quickplay finish. Board eight was a splendid contest as Martin Smith's opponent resisted mightily. Martin had to find some really good moves to prevail and Hackney can take comfort in the ability of such a player in the lower reaches of their second team. Praiseworthily the same player, S. Tracey was prominent in leading our misplaced squad to the right destination at the beginning of the evening. Simon Randall was certainly not better in the early stages of his game but some understandable negativity from T. Donnelly, his Hackney foe in the face of a much higher graded player eventually gave Simon chances along the h file. A well-calculated knight sacrifice by Simon was met with a gutsy queen advance by Donnelly but deep into the quickplay, an error ensured the victory for Simon. Several times this season Ealing's first team have had chances to win eight-nil but elusively the final game has escaped us. Last November it was I who "let the side down" with a draw at Staines and much to the good-hearted amusement of his Ealing colleagues, it was Veljko Stanisic's turn to allow his opponents half a point. Veljko took a pawn advantage into the endgame but it is much to the credit of his experienced adversary that he accurately resisted all Vejko's attempts to win.
