Captains Comment
Stand-in captain Alan Perkins writes:
I thought we were heading for a heavier defeat but in the later stages several games changed in our favour. Mike Lamb held the draw after being the exchange down. I think Sainbayar Tserendorj's opponent turned down a draw but ended up being mated and Simon Randall's position had looked dubious to me. Most of all Martin Smith swindled his opponent in the endgame after having a poor position right from the opening against the Alekhine Defence.
White (Smith)
K:e4, N:c2, P:a2, b3, c4, e5, f3, h3
Black (Stevenson)
K:c5, B:h2, P: a5, b7, c7, e6, f7, g5
Play continued 1.Ne1 (Allowing the Black king to advance) Kb4 2.f4!? (The big idea) g4?? (As Martin saw during the game he should play 3...Bxf4 4.Nd3+ Ka3 5.Nxf4 Kxa2! when Black seems to be winning) 3.h4 Bg3 4 h5 (I can't see a defence for Black now) f5+ 5.exf6 Bh4 6.f7 Be7 7.h6 Bf8 8.h7 winning. I'm not sure if I've remembered this precisely but it's close.
