Captains Comment
Chris Greenshields writes: Last night Ealing 2 hosted Willesden at the Harvester. We were somewhat taken aback on arriving to find a large party of boisterous children in the chess room. Thankfully the manager of the Harvester efficiently relocated the group into the main restaurant, and the more sober procedings of our chess match was able to proceed, among the debris of party poppers and balloons.
Willesden turned out their strongest team for this match. While being quite a small club, they do seem to have a group of players that can turn out for most matches both home and away.
I didn't see most of the games as I was engaged in a struggle against a strong opponent who beat Tony Wells earlier in the season. Like Tony I managed to throw away a won position and lost in time trouble. In fact, my case was probably worse: in the bar after the match a group of us had a discussion about times when you have got home after a match and Fritz shows you a crushing winning move. So I got home, and at move 21 with me to play Fritz says +0.6 (to me), thinks for a minute, then PING: +2.61. A 5 move forcing combination... actually, quite an easy one for us humans... the kind of combination we would find in seconds in a "winning move" competition. Sickening.
On the other boards, Nevenko scored a quick draw next to me, while Milinko won with black, finding a mating combination with his flag hanging. He described the play as trench warfare. Mark on 4 - with white - was less than impressed with his performance in which he said he did not create a single threat in the game and ultimately succumbed to a mating attack. On 5, Dale had a small advantage in the middlegame but was out-manouevred in the endgame, finally droping a pawn on move 48. When another pawn dropped, it was all over.
On 6, John, suffering from a bad knee and swollen ankles, turned up against doctor's orders and duly won a piece and converted the win while standing throughout the game. Top marks to John. Raj on 7 played a tactical combination that didn't work and dropped a piece to Willesden's rapidly improving youngster, thus completing a double for the Batchelor family on the night. Finally, on 8, peace broke out early in Alastair's game after some lively initial tactical skirmishes in a Spanish Anti-Marshall.
So we lost 5-3 which gave Willesden promotion. Congratulations to them, they are a club who are always a pleasure to play against. They are clearly the best team in the division and deserve to win it. We wish them luck in division 1, they are fairly negative about their chances, saying "see you in two season's time", but you never know.
At the very least, they are a better side than the team that goes up with them.
