Captains Comment
Veljko Stanisic gave us a splendid start with a great win on board two. Coming out of the opening Veljko had his customary cramped position but such trifles do not bother him and his accurate play in defence netted material. After exchanges Veljko had the simplest of won endgames. Tserenbat Lozvoi played fairly regularly for the club a few seasons back but he has been out of London and not available for sometime. He made an excellent return to first team with a win on bottom board.
The evening was yet another success for Martin Smith's 2.c3 against the Sicilian. Martin was allowed to grab a pawn early on and Black could not find sufficint counterplay as Martin consolidated around his extra pawn. A blunder gifted me a pawn in the opening but I made little of it as my opponent found just the moves, I didn't want him to find. With neither player wanting to take an unnecessary risk the game ended in a draw by two-fold repetition, the third being about to happen.
A few minutes before the end of the session Adrian Ociepka achieved a marvellous feat in drawing his game after being under intense pressure for much of the contest. Adrian showed amazing fighting spirit and his draw means that Ealing hold a two point advantage in the match. Neither of the remaining Surbiton players felt confident enough in their positions to offer adjudication so both adjourned games are being played on at Ealing. Simon Randall is a pawn up in a rook and knight versus rook and bishop ending and Sainbayar Tserendorj has two minor pieces and three pawns against a rook and four pawns.
