Captains Comment
Ealing's second string came off second best to a determined Harrow team in last night's showdown at the Harvester. With Harrow bent on achieving promotion back to Division 1 and Ealing unable to call on some of its bigger guns, it was a comfortable victory in the end.
Not that Ealing went down without a fight. Considerable credit is due to Michael Turp and Simon Healeas who more than held their own against higher-graded opposition. However, both John Harvey and Alastair Johnstone were in early trouble and ultimately lost.
Dale Gibbons drew on the Black side of a Ruy Lopez and Mark Winterbotham on the White side of a Caro-Kann.
John Torrance looked to have good prospects in his game but the tables turned in the later stages and although John adjourned material down, pinning his hopes on the prospects of his distant passed pawn, the game was lost on resumption.
A setback then, but both Hammersmith and Harrow rank among the favourites for promotion this year, so we need not be overly downhearted.
