Captains Comment

We were well and truly put to the sword by champions-elect Harrow in our final match of the season. I managed an ironic smile when the Harrow captain told me they were going to have to play a late subtitute on board 1 - IM Colin Crouch! Colin proceeded to show his class, deploying the Scandinavian Defence against Tony's 1.e4 and rapidly building an irrepressible attack. It was all over all too quickly. The story was much the same all down the line. I made a horrible mess in a line of the Classical French Defence and was more or less lost from about move 8, although I managed to make my opponent sweat a little before ceding the point. Only Simon gained any early credit from the early exchanges, cannily selecting the Petroff Defence and sniffing the life out of the position. After Simon's initial draw offer was rejected on move 8 (!). his opponent reciprocated the offer on move 11 and Simon duly accepted. Milinko built up some initiative against Nevil Chan, but soon fell foul of a tactic, dropped a piece and with it the point. Nevenko looked to have reached a level position defending the Black side of a classic Kings Indian, but the experienced Nigel Alldritt had it all in hand. Zugzwang decided the day. It looked like Simon was going to be the only Ealing points scorer of the night, but Dale somehow managed to get a draw when most onlookers would have offered long odds against. John Harvey intends to play on his game, but I cannot be sanguine about his chances (indeed, John subsequently resigned without resuming play). I must confess that, at the time, I feared this crushing defeat had consigned Ealing B to likely relegation. Happily, I now know this is not the case and we live to fight on in Division 2 next year. Harrow meanwhile are worthy champions and on this form should be able to handle the step up to the top tier. However, as Kingston's fate has shown, the competition is fierce at the top.
