Captains Comment

Geoff Richards reports: Last night the Thames Valley C team achieved a first by actually winning it's opening match of the season. We normally don't wake up until after the new year celebrations have died down so this augurs very well for the coming season. The first to finish was Jason Obihara on board 5 whose favourite Scotch Gambit proved to be completely beyond his opponent. 1-0 to Ealing. The fighting nature of the chess may be judged by then fact that the remaining five games were all still in progress at the call of time. My opponent on board 6 had been labouring for some time two pawns down in an R+P endgame but graciously resigned rather than drag it out to another day. On board 2 Dale Gibbons sacrificed a pawn early and eventually prevailed over his opponent who duly resigned. On board 4 new member Sam Sarna, playing in his first game for the team, perhaps held a slight advantage in a materially even position but noting the match position accepted his opponent's offer of a draw. On board 3 Raj Jhooti agreed a draw in a dead level position. 4-1 to Ealing This all left Simon Healeas on board 1 going to adjournment facing the prospect of defending a difficult position. We await the outcome with interest.
