Captains Comment
Geoff Richards writes:
Matters developed quickly on the lower boards. On board 6 my opponent, already material down, obligingly left his queen en pris, whilst on board 5 Jason Obihara's opponent was utterly overwhelmed by a "blitzkrieg" attack and soon succumbed to a picturesque checkmate in the centre of the board. 2-0 to Ealing.
On board 4 Sam Sarna's opponent was always on the back foot and eventually material down when under pressure he allowed a simple back row mate. 3-0 to Ealing.
On board 3 Raj Jhooti's games was, as always, most interesting to watch. At one point a bishop for two pawns ahead, Raj's advantage appeared to have disappeared when his opponent forced the exchange of queens, but after boldly declining the offer of a draw he eventually conjured up a checkmate. 4-0 to Ealing.
Amidst all this excitement Simon Healeas on board 1 was quietly acumulating a significant material advantage and when effectively two exchanges down his opponent overlooked a simple checkmate in one. 5-0 to Ealing.
On board 2 Steve Gibbs, playing his first game of the season, was engaged in a tense positional struggle but was obliged to resign when material down with the prospect of further loss. 5-1 to Ealing at the end of the day.
Thus we have now won our first two matches by good margins, our best start ever to a season.
