Captains Comment

Our penultimate league match, and final home match of the season, took place at The Harvester last Thursday 25th February when we ran out comfortable 5-0 winners against Hounslow B. We got off to a flier when the opposition arrived with only five players and so had to default on board 6, leaving me free to spectate for the rest of the evening. 1-0 to Ealing. With less than an hour played Steve Gibbs on board 3 forced his opponent's resignation after an oversight enabled him to win a piece in what was in any case a superior position. 2-0 to Ealing On board 1 Raj Jhooti had a materially even position when his opponent took the bait of a pawn to expose himself to a checkmate trap. 3-0 to Ealing On board 5 Jerry Ball demonstrated his end game skills when he carefully outmanoeuvred his opponent in a tricky knight and pawn ending. 4-0 to Ealing. Just before the call of time Jason Obihara on board 4 forced his opponent's resignation after a clever manoeuvre allowed him to interpose a bishop on the file between his opponent's two rooks, completely reducing their effectiveness and allowing the capture of a passed pawn that they were supporting on the seventh rank. However it never actually got that far since his opponent, by touching one of the rooks, was obliged to capture the bishop, thereby losing the exchange and any initiative that he might have had. 5-0 to Ealing. At the call of time Sam Sarna on board 2, after having spent much of the evening harrssing his opponents queen, adjoured a pawn down, but with all the threats. We are optimistic of a favourable outcome.
