Captains Comment
Geoff Richards reports: We went into our final match of the season having scored 6/7 (and perhaps 7/8 if the adjourned games against Harrow B go as they should) so a victory against Hayes would more or less have assured us of promotion. However it was not be - at least not yet!
The first result came on board 5 where Amr Khalil, on his first outing for the TVC team, was at one stage under considerable time pressure. I personally witnessed him making his 30th move just as his flag was about to fall whilst his oponent had barely used a quarter of an hour! Notwithstanding this pressure, Amr trapped his opponent's bishop such that he was obliged to "sacrifice" it and then conjured up a checkmate. 1-0 to Ealing
Meanwhile on board 2 Sam Sarna did well to win a piece, but unfortunately he left a rook en pris and with absolutely no compensation for the exchange loss was obliged to resign. 1-1
On board 3 Steve Gibbs lost material early on and was unable to recover the situation. 1-2 to Hayes.
On board 6 I was engaged in a tight struggle giving little opportunity to either player, so a draw was agreed. 1.5 - 2.5 to Hayes.
At the call of time Raj Jhooti on board 1 adjourned the exchange up but with the win looking highly problematical, although subsequent adjournment analysis restored his hopes of securing the win.
On board 4 Jason Obihara adjourned a pawn down Q+2R+6P v Q+2R+7P but with plenty of play left in the position.
It now looks like the promotion places in division three will go to two of Harrow B, Staines B and ourselves. Much depends on the results of our adjourned matches (particularly those against Harrow and Hayes here) and the adjourned games and outstanding matches of the other clubs. It looks too close to call at the moment.
