Captains Comment
Geoff Richards writes: Last night, Thursday 19th January, we entertained the friendly folk from Richmond C with an opportunity to avenge our defeat by the same opponents just nine days previously.
On board 5 new member Christopher Russell got off to the best possible start by taking the full point off his old colleagues. Christopher always had the upper hand with a multiplicity of threats and when faced with a serious loss of material his opponent resigned.
On board 6, your captain won a pawn in the middle game tactics and then proceeded to simplify by exchanging off at every opportunity, eventually down to R + 5P v R + 4P. An active rook then won another pawn and on threatening further gain my opponent graciously resigned rather than prolong the matter.
On board 3 Carlo Paglialunga unfortunately blundered away a bishop for pawn after which he felt obliged to resign.
On board 2 John Harvey, B + P for N down, had his work cut out until his opponent obligingly moved his queen en pris. We'll take them anyway they come!
On board 1 Dale Gibbons' game came down to a materially even R + B + P endgame that could have gone either way, but with both players getting short of time a draw was agreed.
The most dramatic events of the evening came on board 4 where Amr Khalil blundered away a bishop after barely 12 moves and, as he admitted candidly in the bar afterwards, was on the verge of resigning. However he chose to "hang on in there" and his doggedness was rewarded when he managed to exploit the open kings rook file against his opponent's castled king, winning queen for rook before delivering the coup de grace on the back rank. Well done Amr!
