Ealing Chess Club holds chess coaching sessions for youngsters from the age of 6. There is a full range of ages and playing abilities at these sessions.
The youngsters are called cadets and the sessions are split into terms which are usually about 10 to 12 weeks long.
The coaching sessions take place from 5:30pm until 7:00pm at Actonians Sports Club, Gunnersbury Drive, W5 4LL (excluding Bank Holidays). The coach (Mark Robinson) organises games between the cadets and also gives easy-to-understand talks on chess tactics and strategies every week.
Mark also organises online chess tournaments for the cadets on Saturdays in a protected environment. Participation is voluntary. We also have occasional over-the-board tournaments against the chess group at St Paul’s Primary School in Brentford.
The English Chess Federation (ECF) has accredited Ealing Chess Club’s coaching sessions as satisfying their criteria for their Junior Pathway Development (see Junior Pathway Development). Ealing Chess Club is only one of eight clubs in the country which has been accredited in this fashion (at the time of writing).
The cost of the sessions is £3 per child per session (£2 for siblings). However, the first session is free to see if the sessions meet the child’s expectations.
Mark Robinson is a former primary school teacher and has a valid DBS certificate.
Please note – The coaching sessions are very popular and we have now reached the maximum number for the classes. However, we do have a waiting list and any new applicants can be placed onto this waiting list.
