League: TVCL, Season 2021-2022
Played : 15th November, 2021
This is the first away match for Ealing B. We lost to Maidenhead B, 0.5 – 5 .5 .
Tony Braine did well to hold his game to a draw. Ian Patterson ( one of our new members) had his first ever OTB competition using the clock. Even though he lost, this game should be a good learning exercise for future competitions.

Comments :
Tony Braine
Tony opened B4 as white and obtained a comfortable position. Both players played pretty accurately and neither side could gain an advantage. Trying to learn from his previous two matches’ time trouble, Tony tried consciously to play to the 75 minute limit and didn’t fall so badly behind, although there’s still work to do on this. The game reduced to a dead even endgame and a draw was agreed.
Neville Rowden
Neville Rowden played Black on Board 5. White opened with d4 and Black responded with d5. White played aggressively and managed to control the centre of the board quite easily. Unfortunately Black was suckered into taking a poison pawn with its Queen at Move 14 which resulted in Black’s Queen being taken. Subsequently, Black struggled to create any semblance of a defence but eventually succumbed to the inevitable at Move 31.
Subas Subbaraj
Subas played Black on board 3. White opened with e4 and subas persisted with his Sicilian Defence, responding of c5. Then in move 3 White played f4. Subas was stumped with this move. He has never seen this move played so early in Sicilian Defence and spent quite some time figuring out his response. The rot set in at move 11 and Black’s game went downhill. Subas had some trouble recording the moves accurately and so had to rely on memory and to work out intuitively some of the moves. Hence the final few moves are not discernable.
