A 3-2 win for Ealing A on 30th October in the Hillingdon league away against last year’s champions West London, despite being outgraded on every board. Andrew Harley, playing white, defeated woman grandmaster Andreea Navrotescu (2390), winning a central pawn in the middlegame and playing the endgame of 2 connected past pawns and rook vs a single pawn and rook very accurately.
Simon Healeas, playing white, beat John Tobisch: Simon’s QP opening was countered with the solid Stonewall Defence (pawns on c6,d5,e6,f5). Simon opened up the position with an early e4, and following a forcing sequence, Simon netted a pawn combined with a more active rook in an endgame which his opponent resigned.
Mark and Hristo both drew, while Martin Smith had a tough game as black against IM Zapolskis in an old-school Scotch Gambit, Advance Variation. Martin initially equalised, but in a complex position White won a pawn in the centre via a clever piece sacrifice and then cleaned up without any difficulty.
